How Many Ships Are in a Carrier Strike Group?

A U.S. carrier strike group is one aircraft carrier and about three to five escort warships. Which ships sail in one, with aircraft, crews and 2026 examples.

Context

A U.S. Navy carrier strike group is one aircraft carrier escorted by about three to five warships, so four to six ships in all. The two groups the Navy listed ship by ship in 2026 each had a carrier and three Arleigh Burke-class destroyers. Supply ships and attack submarines often work with a group, but the Navy rarely lists them as members.

The question matters this autumn because carrier groups have been at the center of the U.S. war with Iran since February 28. As of November 6, the George Washington and George H.W. Bush groups are operating in the Middle East, while the Theodore Roosevelt group, which sailed from San Diego on September 27, has not been announced as arriving. Our count of how many aircraft carriers the US has tracks where each of the 11 carriers is.

Analysis

What is a carrier strike group?

A carrier strike group is the U.S. Navy’s standard fighting formation built around one nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, its air wing and the escorts that protect it. The Navy renamed its carrier battle groups as carrier strike groups in 2004.

There is no fixed recipe: the Navy sizes each group for its mission and the threat it expects. A permanent staff led by a rear admiral, such as Carrier Strike Group 10 for the USS George H.W. Bush, commands the carrier, the air wing and a destroyer squadron.

Analysis

Which ships are in a carrier strike group?

The core is the carrier plus a destroyer squadron of Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers, sometimes with a Ticonderoga-class cruiser. The 2026 groups show the pattern.

The George H.W. Bush group left Norfolk, Virginia, on March 31, 2026, with the carrier and three destroyers: USS Ross, USS Donald Cook and USS Mason. Mason served as the group’s air and missile defense commander, the ship that runs the air battle around the carrier.

The Abraham Lincoln group sailed from San Diego on November 21, 2025, with the carrier and three destroyers: USS Frank E. Petersen Jr., USS Spruance and USS Michael Murphy. It came home on October 8, 2026, after 321 days.

The Theodore Roosevelt group includes the cruiser USS Chosin alongside its destroyer squadron, one of the last groups with a cruiser. Only five Ticonderoga-class cruisers remained after USS Lake Erie and USS Shiloh were decommissioned in late September 2026, and the Navy plans to retire the rest by the end of the decade.

Each escort carries missiles in vertical launch cells: 122 on a Ticonderoga cruiser and 96 on a modern Arleigh Burke destroyer. They defend the carrier against aircraft, missiles, drones and submarines, and they can strike land targets with Tomahawk cruise missiles. USS Spruance fired Tomahawks on February 28, 2026, the first day of the U.S. campaign against Iran.

Analysis

Does a carrier strike group include a submarine and a supply ship?

Usually not on paper. A fast-attack submarine and a supply ship often operate with a group, but the Navy’s 2026 deployment announcements did not list either as a member.

Fuel and food come from Military Sealift Command oilers that move between groups. The Lincoln group refueled at sea 72 times during its 2025-2026 deployment. Submarines operate in secret, and the Navy seldom says which one is near a carrier.

That is why answers to this question range so widely. In the 1990s, a full battle group was often counted as about 10 ships: the carrier, six surface combatants, two attack submarines and a supply ship. Count only the warships that sail together under the group’s commander today, and the number is four to six.

Analysis

How many aircraft and sailors are in a carrier strike group?

A carrier air wing has about 60 to 75 aircraft in nine squadrons, and a group carries 5,000 or more people. The Navy said the Lincoln’s air wing had more than 70 airplanes and helicopters, and that more than 5,000 people sailed with the Bush group in 2026.

The Bush group’s Carrier Air Wing 7 shows the usual mix: four strike fighter squadrons of F/A-18 Super Hornets, one EA-18G Growler electronic attack squadron, one E-2 Hawkeye early-warning squadron, two MH-60 helicopter squadrons and one CMV-22B Osprey squadron that flies people and parts to the ship. Some air wings now include an F-35C squadron in place of one Super Hornet squadron.

Older Navy material often gave about 7,500 sailors and Marines for a group, a figure that fits larger groups with more escorts. The carrier alone, with its air wing aboard, holds roughly 5,000 people.

The pace is heavy. The Lincoln’s air wing flew more than 13,000 sorties and 28,500 flight hours during its 2025-2026 deployment.

Analysis

How many carrier strike groups does the US Navy have?

The Navy has 11 aircraft carriers, and each deployable carrier sails with its own strike group, but only some are at sea at any time. Federal law requires at least 11 operational carriers and, since October 2025, at least 10 carrier air wings.

Carriers rotate through maintenance, training and deployment, so three or four deployed groups is a heavy load. USS Nimitz, the oldest, is now set to retire in March 2027, and the new USS John F. Kennedy passed preliminary acceptance on September 29, 2026, with delivery due in March 2027. In April 2026, three groups were in the Middle East at once for the first time since 2003.

Analysis

How is a carrier strike group different from an amphibious ready group?

A carrier strike group is built around a nuclear carrier that launches jets by catapult; an amphibious ready group is built around a smaller amphibious assault ship that carries Marines. An amphibious ready group typically carries a Marine Expeditionary Unit of more than 2,000 Marines, with helicopters, MV-22 Ospreys and F-35B jets that take off from short decks.

The two often deploy together. The Makin Island amphibious ready group, with the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit, set out in September 2026 in step with the Theodore Roosevelt group, adding 9,000 to 10,000 sailors and Marines to the U.S. forces facing Iran.

Analysis

Do other navies have carrier strike groups?

Yes, on a smaller scale. Britain’s 2025 deployment around HMS Prince of Wales sailed with a Type 45 destroyer, a Type 23 frigate, a Norwegian frigate, an Astute-class submarine and Royal Fleet Auxiliary tankers, with allied ships joining for parts of the eight-month voyage. France’s carrier, the Charles de Gaulle, sails with frigates, a destroyer and a tanker, and China now has three carriers that operate with destroyer escorts.

Key facts

A U.S. carrier strike group in 2026 is one carrier plus about three to five escort warships. The George H.W. Bush group deployed on March 31, 2026, with three destroyers and no cruiser. The Abraham Lincoln group returned on October 8, 2026, after 321 days with three destroyers. A carrier air wing has about 60 to 75 aircraft in nine squadrons. More than 5,000 people sailed with the Bush group. Five Ticonderoga-class cruisers remained in service after September 30, 2026. The Navy has 11 carriers, the minimum federal law allows.
