THE SHORT ANSWERChina has the stronger military. In a China vs India military comparison, Beijing announced a $277bn defence budget for 2026 to India's roughly $90bn, and it fields about 2 million active troops to India's 1.46 million, three carriers to two and an estimated 3,100 ballistic missiles. India's edge is recent combat, from its four-day clash with Pakistan in May 2025.

OUR VERDICTChina wins because it outspends India three to four times and turns that money into stealth fighters, warships and missiles at a pace India cannot match. India fights close to home, has battle experience China lacks and keeps nuclear missiles at sea in three Arihant-class submarines. It must also hold forces against Pakistan, which flies Chinese fighters.

If it came to war

ScenarioShort warLong war
A war on the disputed Himalayan borderEven Both sides already hold large forces on the border. India's S-400s are in place and its air force fought in 2025, while Chinese ballistic missiles can reach every Indian air base.China China's budget and industry replace losses far faster, and India must keep forces facing Pakistan at the same time.
A naval confrontation in the Indian OceanIndia India fights near its own bases with two carriers and 13 destroyers. Chinese strike power is thought to work best within 1,500 to 2,000 nautical miles of the mainland.Even China's larger fleet and shipyards, which launch three or four Type 052Ds a year, let it send and replace more ships, though at long range from home.

Who would win a war between China and India?

China, in most kinds of war the two could fight. It has about 2.03 million active troops to India's 1.46 million, an estimated 1,650 fighters to India's 594 and more than 370 ships and submarines. Its force of about 3,100 ballistic missiles has no Indian equivalent, and its estimated 620 nuclear warheads are more than three times India's 190.

India's advantages lie in experience and position. Its forces fought a four-day air and missile exchange with Pakistan in May 2025 and used the S-400 and Akash in combat. China has not fought a war since 1979, and its last deadly clash came on the Indian border in 2020. Purges of senior Rocket Force and Central Military Commission officers since 2023 also make Chinese readiness harder to judge.

How does China's military budget compare with India's?

China announced 1.91 trillion yuan for defence in 2026, about $277bn and up 7 per cent. Silent Dossier estimates real spending could reach $377bn. India's FY2026-27 allocation is INR 7.85 lakh crore, about $90bn, up 15 per cent and including INR 1.71 lakh crore in pensions. China spends three to four times as much, from an economy of about $19.5 trillion against India's $4.2 trillion.

The gap shows in what each side builds. Chinese yards launch three or four Type 052D destroyers a year and J-20 output runs at an estimated 100 a year. India's Tejas Mk1A is more than two years late because GE F404 engines arrived slowly, and none had been confirmed as handed over by September 2026.

Which has the stronger air force?

China, by a wide margin. Its air force and navy fly an estimated 1,650 fighters, including more than 300 J-20 stealth fighters and a small but growing number of J-35s. About 50 early warning aircraft and around 25 tankers support them.

India counts about 594 fighters, led by some 265 Su-30MKIs and about 35 Rafales, and has no stealth jet in service. Retiring the MiG-21 in September 2025 left 29 fighter squadrons against 42 authorised. India has approved 114 more Rafales, 94 of them to be built in India, but the deal is unsigned. It has six tankers and about five early warning aircraft.

How big is the naval gap?

China's navy is the world's largest by hull count. Its three carriers include Fujian, commissioned in November 2025 with electromagnetic catapults. About ten Type 055s and 35 Type 052Ds lead the escorts. China has some 62 submarines, six of them Type 094 ballistic missile boats and an estimated six to 16 nuclear attack boats.

India has two carriers, Vikrant and Vikramaditya, 13 destroyers and an estimated 150 ships in all. Its third Arihant-class ballistic missile submarine, Aridhaman, was commissioned in April 2026. India has no nuclear attack submarine, and its ageing Sindhughosh and Shishumar boats are due for replacement. Six German-designed Project 75I submarines still await final approval, and the first is not expected before about 2033.

How does Pakistan change the balance?

It ties down Indian forces and puts Chinese weapons on India's western border. Pakistan takes an estimated 61 per cent of China's arms exports. It has received 36 J-10CE fighters with PL-15 missiles, which cost India at least one Rafale on 7 May 2025, and four Type 054A/P frigates. The first of eight Chinese Hangor submarines reached Karachi in June 2026.

India therefore plans for two fronts, with standoffs continuing on the Line of Control with Pakistan and on the disputed border with China. Beijing has also offered Pakistan 40 J-35A stealth fighters, but no contract has been confirmed.
