Branch by branch
| Budget Advantage: United States | China. An announced $277bn for 2026. Silent Dossier estimates real spending could be as high as $377bn. | United States. National defence passed $1 trillion in fiscal 2026 for the first time, about 3.4 per cent of GDP. |
| Air power Advantage: United States | China. About 1,840 modern fighters, including an estimated 300 to 500 J-20s, but only around 25 tankers and 50 early warning aircraft. | United States. About 2,700 combat aircraft, an estimated 850 to 1,000 stealth fighters, 140 bombers and some 500 tankers. |
| Naval power Advantage: United States | China. The largest navy by hull count, more than 370 ships and submarines, with three carriers and the world's biggest shipbuilding industry. | United States. About 290 battle force ships, but 11 nuclear carriers, 76 destroyers and far more tonnage, firepower and experience at sea. |
| Submarines Advantage: United States | China. About 62 boats, but only six ballistic missile submarines and an estimated six to 16 nuclear attack boats. | United States. 71 submarines, every one nuclear powered, including 14 Ohio class ballistic missile boats. |
| Missiles Advantage: China | China. About 3,100 ballistic missiles, most of them short and medium range, built to hold US bases and carriers at risk. | United States. 400 Minuteman III ICBMs and Trident submarine missiles, Conventional strikes come mostly from aircraft and ships. |
| Nuclear arsenal Advantage: United States | China. An estimated 620 warheads, about 20 more than a year earlier, and still growing. | United States. About 3,700 warheads in the stockpile, roughly 1,770 of them deployed. |
If it came to war
| Scenario | Short war | Long war |
|---|---|---|
| A war over Taiwan | China China fights next door with its missile force, aircraft flying from home bases and hundreds of ships. US forces must cross the Pacific and survive missile attacks on their bases. | United States Over months, American submarines, bombers and allies wear down Chinese shipping and the invasion fleet, though Chinese yards replace losses faster. |
| A global contest for sea lanes | United States US carrier groups and nuclear submarines can operate across every ocean from day one. China's reach thins beyond the first island chain. | United States China's shipyards would narrow the gap, but American bases, allies and submarines would keep control of distant sea lanes. |
Who would win a war between China and the United States?
It depends where. Far from China, the United States wins clearly. Near China, and above all over Taiwan, the outcome is genuinely uncertain. The People's Liberation Army has built its forces for exactly that fight: about 3,100 ballistic missiles, a navy of more than 370 hulls and a J-20 stealth fleet estimated at 300 or more.
America's advantages are the ones that take decades to build. It operates 11 carriers to China's three, and 71 nuclear submarines to an estimated 12 to 22. It owns roughly 500 tankers against China's 25, which lets its aircraft fight far from home. Its network of treaty allies has no Chinese equivalent.
Is China's navy bigger than America's?
By ship count, yes. China has more than 370 ships and submarines against about 290 American battle force ships, and the US count is set to fall as more than a dozen ships retire in 2026. By tonnage and firepower the US Navy is still well ahead, and under the sea the gap is wide. The trend runs China's way: it has the world's largest shipbuilding capacity and launches Type 052D destroyers at three or four a year.
Which has the better fighter jets, China or the US?
The United States, for now. It flies about 184 F-22s and an estimated 650 to 750 F-35s, with two decades of stealth operations behind it. China's J-20 fleet has grown fast, to somewhere between 300 and 500 aircraft, and the J-35 is entering service for carriers and land bases. The numbers are closing. The support behind them is not.
A fighter is only as useful as the tanker and radar plane behind it. America has about 500 tankers and 100 early warning aircraft. China has around 25 tankers and 50 early warning jets. Near its own coast that hardly matters. Over the open Pacific it decides who can stay in the fight.
What is each side's biggest weakness?
China has not fought a war since 1979, and a purge of senior commanders and Rocket Force generals that began in 2023 is still running. The United States has low fighter readiness, backlogged shipyards and munitions stocks drained by the 2026 Iran war, which left it with an estimated 234 to 278 THAAD interceptors. Rebuilding those stocks will take until about 2029.
