Branch by branch
| Air power Advantage: United States | Iran. An estimated 60 to 150 legacy F-14, F-4, MiG-29 and Su-24 jets survive, and none is stealthy. | United States. An estimated 2,400 fighters, 850 to 1,000 of them stealth types, plus B-2 and B-52 bombers. |
| Naval Advantage: United States | Iran. The oceangoing fleet was largely sunk in 2026. Fast attack craft, mines and Ghadir midget submarines remain. | United States. 11 nuclear carriers, about 73 Arleigh Burke destroyers and 71 nuclear submarines. |
| Missiles Advantage: Iran | Iran. An estimated 1,000 to 2,500 ballistic missiles reaching up to 2,000 km, enough to cover every US base in the Gulf. This is the one domain where Iran's arsenal is the larger. | United States. 400 Minuteman III ICBMs held for nuclear use. Conventional strikes come from aircraft and ships instead, about 850 Tomahawks in the first month of the 2026 war alone. |
| Air and missile defence Advantage: United States | Iran. Integrated air defences were assessed 85 to 90 per cent degraded in March 2026. | United States. About 60 Patriot and eight THAAD batteries, though the 2026 war left an estimated 234 to 278 THAAD interceptors and fewer than 1,000 Patriot rounds. |
| Manpower Advantage: United States | Iran. An estimated 520,000 to 610,000 active troops, split between the regular army and the Revolutionary Guard. | United States. About 1.3 million active personnel, professional and deployable worldwide. |
| Nuclear Advantage: United States | Iran. No warheads. The programme is latent. | United States. About 3,700 warheads in the stockpile. |
If it came to war
| Scenario | Short war | Long war |
|---|---|---|
| A US air campaign against Iran | United States As in 2026, US aircraft and missiles suppress air defences and hit launchers within days while Iran fires back at Gulf bases. | United States Iran digs launchers out of tunnels and keeps up limited fire. The US cannot occupy or fully disarm it from the air, but Iran cannot stop the strikes either. |
| A fight over the Strait of Hormuz | Iran Fast boats, mines, drones and missiles can disrupt shipping and push oil prices up at once. | United States The US Navy clears the strait and destroys coastal launch sites, at real cost and over weeks. |
Could Iran beat the United States in a war?
No. US defence spending passed $1 trillion in 2026, somewhere between 40 and 140 times Iran's, depending on how Tehran's hidden spending is counted. In the 2026 campaign American aircraft operated over Iran at will. Iran's air defences lost most of their strength within weeks, and of the 42 US aircraft lost or damaged, 24 were MQ-9 drones.
Iran's strategy is not to win but to raise the price. By October 2026 at least 21 US service members had been killed and more than 860 wounded. Shahed drones and fast attack craft threaten tankers in Hormuz. That is real pressure, and Tehran applied it before the April ceasefire and in the breakdowns since.
Where is the United States vulnerable?
Stockpiles. The 2026 war burned through interceptors and long range munitions that were already depleted by Ukraine, Israel and the Red Sea, and the THAAD stock will not be rebuilt until about 2029. Fighter readiness rates often sit below 60 per cent. Shipyards are backlogged. None of that changes the outcome against Iran. It does limit how long Washington can fight one war while deterring another.
How does Iran's navy compare with the US Navy?
There is barely a comparison left. A US submarine sank the frigate Dena in March 2026, and no Iranian oceangoing warship is reported to have survived the war. What remains are Revolutionary Guard fast attack craft and Ghadir midget submarines, built for ambush in the narrow Gulf.
The US Navy runs 11 nuclear carriers, around 73 Arleigh Burke destroyers and 71 nuclear submarines. Iran's naval threat now comes from mines, drones and antiship missiles fired from the shore, which is how it always planned to fight.
Would a new war between the US and Iran look like 2026?
Mostly, with one difference. Iran has had months to reopen bombed tunnel entrances and hide launchers, so the first wave of US strikes would find fewer easy targets. Silent Dossier expects Iran to aim again at Gulf bases and shipping rather than at American ships at sea.
Washington's answer would again come from the air. Bombers, carrier jets and cruise missiles can wreck what Iran has rebuilt. They cannot stop Iran rebuilding it a second time.

Questions readers ask
Is the US military stronger than Iran's?
Far stronger. Iran's only advantages are geography and a large ballistic missile and drone arsenal within reach of US bases.
Can Iran hit US bases?
Yes. Its ballistic missiles reach about 2,000 km, covering every US base in the Gulf, and it fired at Gulf targets throughout the 2026 war.
Did the US attack Iran in 2026?
Yes. A joint US and Israeli air campaign began on 28 February 2026 and wrecked Iran's air defences and navy and many of its missile launchers. A ceasefire followed on 8 April, but it has broken down repeatedly and US strikes have continued on and off.
Can Iran close the Strait of Hormuz?
It can disrupt traffic for a time with mines, boats, drones and missiles. Silent Dossier assesses that it could not hold the strait shut against the US Navy for long.
