How strong is France's military in 2026?
France is the only EU state that designs and builds its own fighters, tanks, nuclear submarines, missiles and warheads. It has about 204,000 active personnel and around 41,000 reservists. On the Silent Dossier index it sits just behind Israel and narrowly ahead of Britain.
French troops left the Sahel in 2022. Since then France's warships have escorted shipping in the Red Sea, in 2024 and 2025, and its air defences have been in action over the Middle East into 2026. The trouble is depth: fleets are small and stocks of munitions are shallow.
Money is rising. The 2026 defence budget of €57.1bn, about $66bn, was adopted in February. That is €6.7bn more than in 2025, including €3.5bn extra ordered by President Macron, and comes to about 2.2 per cent of GDP. The update to the 2024 to 2030 military programming law, agreed in June and July 2026, adds another €36bn to 2030.
How many Rafale jets does France have?
About 150. The Air and Space Force flies 105 to 112 Rafale B and C, and the navy has 40 to 42 Rafale M for its carrier. At the end of 2025 the air force listed 184 combat jets, with 50 Mirage 2000D strike aircraft and 22 Mirage 2000-5F interceptors alongside its Rafales. Some of the 2000-5Fs have since gone to Ukraine. France has no fifth generation fighter.
Exports are eating the production line. Dassault's backlog stood at 208 jets in July 2026, and 165 of them were for foreign buyers: 80 for the UAE, 42 for Indonesia and 26 Rafale M for the Indian navy. India has approved 114 more in principle, a deal worth about $39bn that is still being negotiated. Ukraine announced its first 16 in July 2026, but no contract has been confirmed.
Old jets are retiring while new ones go abroad, so the air force could drop below 130 Rafale equivalents in 2026 and 2027. Its chief wants 230. An extra order for 60 jets was reportedly dropped from the 2026 programme update.
Does France have an aircraft carrier?
Yes, one: the nuclear powered Charles de Gaulle. She is due to serve until 2038, when her successor, already ordered, should take over. With a single hull, France has no carrier at sea while she is in dock.
Three Mistral class assault ships, two Horizon air defence destroyers and eight FREMM frigates form the core of the surface fleet. Ageing La Fayette frigates bring the total of first rank escorts to about 15. The delivery date of the first new FDI frigate, Amiral Ronarc'h, is unconfirmed.
Every French submarine is nuclear powered. There are four Triomphant class missile boats and four Suffren class attack boats, the latest of them De Grasse, delivered on 24 June 2026. One or two old Rubis boats remain, and the renewal is on or ahead of schedule.
How many nuclear weapons does France have?
About 290 was the last published figure. On 2 March 2026, at the Île Longue submarine base, Macron ordered an increase and said France would stop publishing the number. Silent Dossier estimates 290 to 300 for now.
The sea leg is 48 to 64 M51 missiles aboard the four Triomphant boats. The newest version, the M51.3, is assessed to reach 8,000 to 10,000 km. The air leg rests on an estimated 40 to 54 ASMPA-R cruise missiles. In the same speech Macron offered a 'forward deterrence' arrangement to eight European states.
How strong is the French Army?
It is light, and short of guns. The Leclerc fleet numbers 200 to 222 tanks, now being upgraded to the XLR standard. Silent Dossier estimates 60 to 110 CAESAR self propelled howitzers, and much of their output has gone to Ukraine. Another 109 CAESAR Mk II guns arrive from 2026. The army also has 67 attack helicopters.
Germany, Poland and Greece all score higher than France on land. Air defence on the ground is in better shape. France has an estimated six to eight SAMP/T batteries after sending at least one to Ukraine, and the SAMP/T NG upgrade arrives by about 2030.
Is France stronger than the UK?
Yes, narrowly, because France depends less on anyone else. Its deterrent is French from missile to warhead, while Britain's Trident missile is shared with the United States. France also fields a long range air defence missile, which Britain lacks. It has more people under arms and a slightly stronger army.
Britain spends more, an estimated $85bn to $92bn against France's $66bn. Its F-35Bs give it stealth jets France does not have, and it scores better in the air and on missiles. It also has two carriers to France's one. The two navies score almost level.
Combat record and readiness
Ended Sahel operations in 2022. Has escorted Red Sea shipping and flown air defence missions in the Middle East from 2024 to 2026.
French industry makes Rafale fighters, Leclerc tanks, CAESAR guns, nuclear submarines, frigates, Aster, SCALP and Exocet missiles and the M51 ballistic missile. Dassault holds a backlog of 208 Rafales, 165 of them for export. Export orders reached EUR 21.2bn in 2025.
Fleets and stocks are thin: the air force had about 184 combat jets at end-2025 and could fall below 130 Rafale equivalents in 2026 to 2027 as new jets go abroad. CAESAR output largely goes to Ukraine. A EUR 413bn plan for 2024 to 2030, raised in 2026, funds recovery.

Questions readers ask
How strong is France's military?
It is the strongest in the European Union, and in Europe only Russia ranks ahead of it on the Silent Dossier index. France builds its own jets, nuclear submarines, missiles and warheads, but its fleets are small and its munitions stocks shallow.
How many Rafale does France have?
About 150: 105 to 112 Rafale B and C with the air force and 40 to 42 Rafale M with the navy. Exports and retirements could push the air force below 130 Rafale equivalents in 2026 and 2027.
How many aircraft carriers does France have?
One, the nuclear powered Charles de Gaulle, due to serve until 2038. A successor carrier has been ordered to replace her.
How many nuclear weapons does France have?
The last published figure was about 290. In March 2026 Macron ordered an increase and ended publication, so Silent Dossier estimates 290 to 300.
How many soldiers does France have?
About 204,000 active personnel across all services, with around 41,000 reservists behind them.
Is France or the UK militarily stronger?
