SAMP/T NG vs Patriot: Can Europe’s System Fill Ukraine’s Patriot Gap?

SAMP/T NG sees all around with one radar and fires Aster 30; Patriot has the combat record and the factories. How they compare as Ukraine runs short.

Which is better, SAMP/T NG or Patriot?

Ukraine has run out of Patriot interceptors, CNN reported on 15 October, and a batch already paid for by allies is reportedly waiting for US approval. That puts Europe’s alternative, the Franco-Italian SAMP/T NG, at the centre of Kyiv’s plans.

On paper SAMP/T NG has the better radar: one rotating array watches the whole sky, where Patriot’s current radar covers a sector. Patriot has what SAMP/T NG lacks: a long combat record against Russian ballistic missiles, 18 operating countries and production heading for 2,000 missiles a year. The verdict is practical, not technical. Patriot is the better system to have this winter; SAMP/T NG is the one Europe can build for itself, if it can build enough Aster missiles.

Key takeaways

SAMP/T NG’s radar gives 360-degree coverage and is credited with detecting targets at 400 km, and the system intercepts aircraft and cruise missiles beyond 150 km. Patriot has shot down Kinzhal missiles over Kyiv, and a PAC-3 MSE costs about $5.3 million a round in the US Army’s latest request. Ukraine’s first SAMP/T NG systems are due from 2027, and Aster production, not design, is the limit.

What is SAMP/T NG?

SAMP/T NG is the new generation of the ground-based air defence system built by Eurosam, a joint venture of MBDA and Thales, for France and Italy. Its multi-function radar rotates to cover 360 degrees and the sky directly overhead, tracks more than 1,000 targets and is set up in under 15 minutes, according to Eurosam. Thales’s GF 300 version is credited with a detection range of 400 km.

A battery has up to six launchers with eight missiles each, so 48 are ready to fire. It fires the Aster 30 B1, a medium-range missile with anti-ballistic capability, and the newer B1NT, which has a Ka-band seeker for ballistic and hypersonic threats. Eurosam says the system intercepts aircraft and cruise missiles beyond 150 km and can stop manoeuvring ballistic missiles with a range class beyond 600 km. Deliveries start in 2026.

Analysis

How does Patriot compare?

Patriot fires two families of interceptor. The PAC-2 GEM-T uses a blast-fragmentation warhead; the PAC-3 and its longer-ranged MSE hit their target directly. A launcher carries four PAC-2s or 12 MSEs, and a battery has six to eight launchers, according to CSIS. The current AN/MPQ-65 radar watches a sector rather than the whole sky. Its replacement, LTAMDS, has three arrays for full 360-degree coverage, which removes SAMP/T NG’s clearest advantage once it is fielded.

The combat record is Patriot’s. Ukraine made the first Kinzhal intercept over Kyiv on 4 May 2023, and Patriot has since been its main defence against ballistic missiles. No ballistic intercept by SAMP/T in Ukraine has been independently confirmed.

Analysis

Which costs more, and which can be built faster?

A PAC-3 MSE costs about $5.3 million in the US Army’s 2027 budget request, Army Recognition reported, and Lockheed Martin builds about 600 a year on the way to a target of 2,000 by 2030. Boeing has a seven-year contract to triple output of the missile’s seeker. Silent Dossier compared that price with cheaper American interceptors in What Is Anduril’s Steelfin Missile?

There is no official price for an Aster 30, and MBDA has said only that it will double Aster output in 2026, without giving numbers. Delivery time is where SAMP/T NG has already won customers. When Denmark chose it in 2025 for about DKK 58 billion, it cited Patriot’s longer delivery times.

Analysis

Can SAMP/T NG fill Ukraine’s Patriot gap?

Not this winter. Under a July declaration, France will send Ukraine two older SAMP/T systems and one GF 300 radar before the end of 2026, and four SAMP/T NG systems will be deployed progressively from 2027, Defense News reported. Licensed Aster 30 production in Ukraine is planned to start before the end of the year. President Volodymyr Zelensky has named the shortage of Aster missiles as the main obstacle.

Meanwhile the gap is measured in Patriot rounds. Silent Dossier’s account of the shortage, and of Zelensky’s request to Europe for 300 interceptors, is in Ukraine’s Patriot Interceptors Run Out as Iskanders Hit.

The verdict, and what to watch

Patriot is the proven ballistic missile killer and the one Ukraine needs now; SAMP/T NG is the better sensor and the sovereign European option, held back by missile supply rather than design. Watch whether Washington releases the held Patriot batch, whether the first GF 300 radar and the interim SAMP/T systems reach Ukraine before the year ends, and whether Aster production in Ukraine actually starts.
