How strong is Ukraine's military in 2026?
Ukraine has fought Russia since 2014 and at full scale since 2022. The country is fully mobilised, and its forces have been in heavy combat without a break ever since.
On the index it trails Germany and Egypt and finishes ahead of Iran, Poland and Italy. Ukraine outscores Germany on land forces and manpower, but its air force is small and it has almost no navy. Russia is ahead of Ukraine on every pillar we score.
How big is Ukraine's army?
Silent Dossier estimates about 880,000 active personnel, inside a range of 800,000 to 1 million. No exact figure is available. People are the scarcest thing the army has, and only about 32 million of them live in the territory the government holds.
Tanks are harder to count. We estimate 900 to 1,800, a mix of Leopard 1 and 2, American Abrams and Soviet T-64 and T-72 types. We have no reliable 2026 count for armoured vehicles or artillery, and no loss total we trust, so we publish none.
How many drones does Ukraine make?
Millions. The 2026 plan calls for more than 7 million drones, and FPV capacity is put above 8 million a year. Ukraine built more interceptor drones to hunt Russian Shaheds between January and April 2026 than in the whole of 2025. Its shortages are soldiers and interceptor missiles.
Range has grown as well. FP-1 and Liutyi attack drones hit targets far inside Russia, and Operation Spiderweb in June 2025 was one such deep strike. The FP-5 Flamingo cruise missile is claimed to fly about 3,000 km and is reportedly built at roughly one a day. On 10 June 2026 Flamingos struck the VNIIR-Progress plant in Cheboksary. Ukrainian factories also turn out Neptune missiles and the Bohdana howitzer.
How many F-16s does Ukraine have?
Silent Dossier estimates 40 to 75 F-16AM/BM jets in service. Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway and Belgium have pledged about 85 to 95 between them, and most of Belgium's 53 are due by 2029. Perhaps 3 to 10 French Mirage 2000-5F jets fly alongside an estimated 30 to 60 surviving MiG-29, Su-27, Su-24 and Su-25 aircraft.
That comes to roughly 80 fighters, none of them stealth jets. Gripens come next. In May 2026 Sweden agreed to donate 16 Gripen C/D, with the first expected within about ten months, and to sell 16 to 20 Gripen E for $2.54bn, arriving from around 2029. A letter of intent signed in October 2025 points to 100 to 150 Gripen E in the long run.
How much does Ukraine depend on Western aid?
Ukraine relies on the West most heavily for air defence. It has an estimated 7 to 13 long range batteries: 6 to 10 Patriots, one to three SAMP/T systems from France and Italy, and its remaining S-300s. Some 10 to 25 IRIS-T SLM and NASAMS units cover the middle tier, and Germany is delivering at least two more Patriot systems.
Missiles for those launchers are the problem. President Zelenskyy says Patriot interceptor deliveries in 2026 are about a third of the 2025 level. Around 1,000 interceptors are reportedly being contracted from the United States. A licence to build Patriots in Ukraine was reported in July 2026 and remains unconfirmed.
Money is the other gap. Defence spending is about $65bn in 2026, near 2.8 trillion hryvnia and an estimated 27 per cent of GDP, before donor aid. The defence budget is still some $27bn short because partner funding is behind plan. Ukrainian factories meet only about half of the army's needs.
Does Ukraine have a navy?
Only a small one. Ukraine has no destroyers or frigates and no submarines. Its one new corvette, the Ada class Hetman Ivan Mazepa, is still in Turkey, and an estimated 10 to 30 patrol boats remain. Ukraine fights at sea with a large fleet of uncrewed surface vessels that we cannot count.
Compare Ukraine
Combat record and readiness
Fighting Russia since 2014 and in full-scale war since February 2022. Its deep strikes reach far into Russia, including the June 2025 drone attack on strategic bomber bases and a June 2026 Flamingo missile strike on Cheboksary.
Makes drones by the million, with a 2026 plan above 7 million, plus Neptune and Flamingo cruise missiles, the Bohdana howitzer and sea drones. Domestic output covers roughly half its needs.
Fully mobilised and highly experienced, but short of soldiers and Western air defence interceptors. Ukraine says 2026 Patriot deliveries run at about a third of 2025 levels, and it faces a defence funding gap near $27bn. Its mixed Western fleet needs heavy maintenance.
