Branch by branch
| Air power Advantage: Israel | Israel. 48 of 50 F-35Is delivered and 25 more on order, plus F-15I and F-16I strike jets with a combat record over Iran in 2025 and 2026. Two new KC-46A tankers arrived in 2026. | Turkey. About 238 F-16s and one squadron of F-4E 2020s. No new fighter has arrived since the 2010s. Twenty Typhoons are due from 2030 and KAAN is still in flight test. |
| Missiles Advantage: Israel | Israel. Jericho missiles with an estimated reach of about 4,800 km, held mainly for nuclear delivery. | Turkey. Tayfun short range ballistic missiles in service, range undisclosed but estimated at about 560 km. Longer Block 4 versions are not yet operational. |
| Air and missile defence Advantage: Israel | Israel. Arrow, David's Sling and Iron Dome faced 600 to 650 Iranian ballistic missiles in 2026. Israel says it stopped about 92 per cent, though Arrow stocks ran low. | Turkey. Four Russian S-400 batteries sit inactive and Siper is only now entering service, so NATO Patriot and Italian SAMP/T units fill the gap. |
| Naval Advantage: Turkey | Israel. Six Dolphin submarines, the last arriving in September 2026, and seven corvettes. | Turkey. About 13 submarines, 16 to 19 frigates and the assault ship TCG Anadolu, which now launches TB3 drones. A 60,000 tonne carrier is under construction. |
| Land forces Advantage: Turkey | Israel. An estimated 400 to 600 Merkava tanks, tested in Gaza and Lebanon since 2023. | Turkey. An estimated 2,200 to 2,500 tanks, mostly Leopard 2A4 and M60T. The first Altay was delivered in October 2025, with 250 ordered. |
| Manpower Advantage: Turkey | Israel. About 169,500 active troops and 465,000 reservists, many with hundreds of days of service since 2023. | Turkey. About 355,000 active troops, 380,000 reservists and 157,000 paramilitary personnel. |
If it came to war
| Scenario | Short war | Long war |
|---|---|---|
| An air and missile confrontation over Syria | Israel Israeli F-35s and tankers outclass Turkey's ageing F-16s, and Turkey's own long range air defence is still being fielded. | Even Turkey's drone lines and $10bn export industry can sustain a long fight. Israel leans on US munitions and on Arrow interceptors that cost an estimated $2m to $3m each and are slow to replace. |
| A naval standoff in the eastern Mediterranean | Turkey Turkey's frigates, submarines and drone carrier give it more ships on station than Israel can match. | Turkey Israeli aircraft can threaten Turkish ships, but Israel has no surface fleet to hold the sea for long. |
Is Turkey stronger than Israel militarily?
No. Turkey has twice Israel's active troops, four to five times as many tanks and the bigger navy. Israel has the better air force, the only proven missile defence of the two and far more recent experience of war. In a fight decided in the air, those three outweigh Turkish mass.
Money points the same way. Israel's 2026 defence budget is NIS 143bn, about $45bn. Turkey's defence ministry has about $19bn, although its wider security spending is larger.
Why is Turkey's air force falling behind?
Turkey was removed from the F-35 programme in 2019 over its Russian S-400 purchase and has not received a new fighter since. Its front line is about 238 F-16s. Used Typhoons from Qatar and Oman were held back during the regional war, and 20 new Typhoons are not due until 2030 to 2032.
Washington has said an F-35 deal is possible if the S-400s go, and Moscow confirmed talks on their fate in July 2026. In October the US said Turkey was still legally barred. The KAAN fighter has 20 production aircraft ordered for 2028 to 2030, but its American F110 engines need US export licences.
Where does Turkey beat Israel?
Mass and exports. Turkey sold a record $10.05bn of defence goods abroad in 2025, from Bayraktar drones to Hurjet trainers for Spain. It flies an estimated 160 to 250 TB2 and TB3 drones and 20 to 40 Akinci, and its navy is the larger of the two. The weak point is engines: many Turkish drones fly on Ukrainian power plants and the first Altay tanks run on Korean ones.
How well did Israel's defences hold in 2026?
Well, at a price. Between 28 February and the 8 April ceasefire, Iran fired 600 to 650 ballistic missiles at Israel. Arrow stocks ran low and production has been sped up twice. Iron Beam, Israel's new laser, was still not fully operational in August 2026.
Questions readers ask
Who would win in a war, Turkey or Israel?
Israel, in the air and missile war these two would most likely fight. Turkey's larger army and navy matter less when Israel's F-35s and missile defences hold the advantage.
How many fighter jets does Israel have?
An estimated 300, including 48 F-35I Adir stealth fighters, 25 F-15Is and roughly 150 to 200 F-16s. Turkey has about 258 fighters, nearly all of them F-16s.
How many F-35s does Israel have?
48 of the 50 F-35Is first ordered had been delivered by August 2026. A third squadron of 25 starts arriving from late 2027, and a fourth squadron was approved in May 2026.
Does Turkey have F-35s?
No. Turkey was removed from the programme in 2019 and stays barred while its Russian S-400s remain. Any return is tied to giving them up.
Does Turkey have nuclear weapons?
No. The US B61 bombs at Incirlik stay in US custody under NATO sharing. Israel has an estimated 90 undeclared warheads.
