How strong is Israel's military in 2026?
Israel fights with a small standing army and a very large reserve. Roughly 169,500 active personnel can be reinforced by about 465,000 reservists. That model delivers mass in wartime, but it has called the same people up again and again since October 2023.
Since then Israel has fought in Gaza and Lebanon, struck Syria and Yemen, and run two campaigns against Iran, in June 2025 and from February to April 2026. On the Silent Dossier index it leads the region, with Saudi Arabia next and Turkey and Iran further back.
How many F-35s does Israel have?
Israel had taken delivery of 48 of its first 50 F-35I Adir fighters by August 2026, with the last two due before the year ends. A further 25 were ordered in 2023 for a third squadron, with deliveries from late 2027, taking the fleet to 75. A deal for 25 new F-15IA strike jets followed in November 2024. In May 2026 a ministerial committee approved a fourth F-35I squadron and a second F-15IA squadron, though no contracts have been confirmed.
Around the F-35s sit some 25 F-15I Ra'am strike fighters, an estimated 40 to 58 older F-15 Baz jets and 150 to 200 F-16s. Silent Dossier estimates about 300 fighters in total and about 580 military aircraft of all kinds.
How does Israel's missile defence work?
In layers. Arrow 2 and Arrow 3 take on long range ballistic missiles. David's Sling covers the middle tier, and an estimated 10 to 15 Iron Dome batteries deal with rockets and drones. Iron Beam, a 100 kW class laser, received its first system in December 2025 but was still not fully operational in August 2026.
The weak point is the magazine. Iran fired some 600 to 650 ballistic missiles at Israel between 28 February and the 8 April ceasefire, and those salvos used up large numbers of Arrow and David's Sling interceptors. Stock levels are not public. Arrow production has been accelerated twice this year and American THAAD batteries have been deployed, but interceptors are the resource Israel can run short of.
Does Israel have nuclear weapons?
Israel neither confirms nor denies it. Silent Dossier's estimate is around 90 warheads, deliverable by aircraft, by Jericho missiles with a range assessed at about 4,800 km, and reportedly from submarines. The sixth Dolphin boat, INS Drakon, arrived in Haifa on 24 September 2026.
How strong is Israel's army?
Smaller than its reputation. Silent Dossier estimates 400 to 600 Merkava tanks, against an estimated 2,200 to 2,500 in Turkey, and much of the army's strength sits in reserve brigades. Repeated call-ups since 2023 have worn those reservists down, and the dispute over drafting Haredi men is unresolved.
Firepower and intelligence make up for the numbers. That works against armed groups in Gaza and Lebanon. A long war against a large conventional army would test it much harder.
What are the limits of Israeli power?
The navy is a coastal force of seven corvettes and six submarines. Israel has no formal defence treaty and relies on $3.8bn a year in American military funding until 2028, on US munitions and on German submarines.
The 2026 defence budget was raised to about $45bn during the Iran war, close to 8 per cent of a $580bn economy, for a country of 10 million people. No state in the region matches Israel's stealth fighters and missile defence, and the bill for keeping both stocked will keep rising.
Combat record and readiness
At war in Gaza since October 2023, with a Lebanon campaign in 2024 and strikes in Syria and Yemen. Fought Iran for 12 days in June 2025 and again with the US from 28 February to 8 April 2026. Israel says it intercepted about 92% of an estimated 600 Iranian ballistic missiles.
Israeli firms make Arrow, David's Sling, Iron Dome and the Iron Beam laser, plus Merkava tanks, Hermes and Heron drones, Jericho missiles and Ofek satellites. Arrow 3 capacity tripled in 2025. Israel is a major arms exporter.
Two Iran wars drew down Arrow and US THAAD interceptor stocks, which are slow to rebuild. Reservists have served hundreds of days since 2023. Worn-out 707 tankers are giving way to the KC-46, the first of which arrived in May 2026.
