Which country has the strongest military in the Middle East?
Israel. It is the only regional power with stealth fighters, 48 F-35Is delivered of 50 ordered, with a fourth squadron approved in May 2026. It is also the only one with nuclear weapons, an estimated 90 warheads. Its layered defence of Arrow, David's Sling and Iron Dome faced some 600 to 650 Iranian ballistic missiles between February and April 2026, and the Iron Beam laser is still not fully operational. A wartime budget of about $45bn buys technology rather than mass. Regular strength is about 169,500.
Its weak point is depth. Arrow interceptors cost $2m to $3m each and are slow to replace, and two wars with Iran in little more than a year drew the stock down hard.
Is Saudi Arabia or Turkey the region's second military power?
Saudi Arabia, narrowly, on our index. Its budget, an estimated $64bn to $78bn, pays for some 140 to 154 F-15SAs, 72 Typhoons and an estimated 18 to 24 Patriot batteries, and Washington cleared 48 F-35As for sale in September 2026, though deliveries are years away. It depends on foreign contractors to keep those fleets flying, and the renewed Yemen war since July 2026 has cost it drones and possibly an F-15.
Turkey outnumbers it on the ground and at sea: about 355,000 troops, an estimated 2,200 to 2,500 tanks and 13 submarines. Its arms industry builds drones, frigates and the KAAN fighter, and serial deliveries of the Siper long range air defence system began in 2026. The gap is in the air. Turkey has taken no new fighter since the 2010s, and its stopgap Typhoons from Britain, Qatar and Oman have yet to arrive.
Which Arab army is the strongest?
Saudi Arabia leads the Gulf on money and modern aircraft. The UAE is smaller but was the most targeted Gulf state in the Iran war, engaging 457 ballistic missiles and more than 2,000 drones in its first five weeks. Qatar flies 108 modern fighters (Rafales, F-15QAs and Typhoons) and little else. Egypt, which Silent Dossier counts with Africa, is the largest Arab military.
How strong is Iran's military after the 2026 war?
Much weaker than its reputation. US and Israeli strikes from late February 2026 degraded its air defences by an assessed 80 to 90%. Estimates of surviving missile launchers run from about a fifth to half, and missile production has restarted underground at lower volume. Iran still has an estimated 520,000 to 610,000 troops and around 1,600 tanks, but its air force of an estimated 170 combat aircraft is largely obsolete and has no fifth generation jets.
The navy fared worse. A US submarine sank the frigate Dena, a Kilo class submarine was sunk at Bandar Abbas, and no ocean going surface combatant appears to have survived. A ceasefire agreed in April 2026 has broken down repeatedly since.
What about the rest of the region?
Iraq, with about 193,000 troops, is reportedly close to buying 20 Turkish air defence systems. Jordan's air force and air defences intercepted around 95 Iranian missiles and drones over 16 days in July 2026. Kuwait and Bahrain field small modern air forces and host American forces, Bahrain as home of the US Fifth Fleet. Oman spends an estimated 7.5% of GDP. Syria is reported to be restructuring its new army into six corps after the fall of Assad, and Lebanon's army has been tasked with disarming Hezbollah.
Silent Dossier's verdict
The Middle East has one clear military leader. Israel's air and missile defence edge survived two Iran wars, though its interceptor stocks took a beating. Saudi Arabia and Turkey sit close enough that a single delivery could swap them: Riyadh's first F-35s or Ankara's first KAAN squadron. Iran has fallen out of the top tier for now, and how much it can rebuild under a US naval blockade is the open question.
Questions readers ask
Which country has the strongest military in the Middle East?
Israel, because of its F-35 fleet, its nuclear arsenal and the region's most advanced missile defence. Saudi Arabia is next on our index, with Turkey close behind.
Which Arab army is the strongest?
Egypt is the largest Arab military. In the Gulf, Saudi Arabia is the strongest on spending and equipment, while the UAE has the most missile defence combat behind it after the 2026 Iran war.
Is Iran stronger than Israel?
Not in 2026. Iran has more troops, but US and Israeli strikes knocked out an assessed 80 to 90% of its air defences, and it has nothing to match Israel's F-35s.
Does any Middle Eastern country besides Israel have nuclear weapons?
No. Israel is assessed to hold an estimated 90 warheads; no other state in the region has nuclear weapons.
Is Turkey stronger than Saudi Arabia?
Narrowly not, on our index. Saudi Arabia's lead comes from spending, air defence and modern jets. Turkey has more troops, tanks and submarines and builds its own fighters, ships and missiles, so the gap could close quickly.
