How strong is NATO's military compared with Russia?
On conventional power, NATO is far ahead. The fifteen members we profile spend about $1.6 trillion a year between them, against Russia's estimated $145bn to $200bn. America's F-22s and F-35s alone outnumber Russia's Su-57s, which Silent Dossier puts at 16 to 35, by more than twenty to one.
Russia's edge is narrower and harder. It runs a war economy spending about 5% of GDP, an army with more than four years of combat behind it, and the world's largest nuclear arsenal at an estimated 5,500 warheads. Its armour has paid for that experience, with more than 4,390 tanks lost by August 2026. NATO's weak point is time. European stocks are thin, and the 2026 Iran war drained American interceptor stocks that will take years to rebuild.
Which NATO country has the strongest military after the US?
France, narrowly ahead of Britain. They are Europe's two nuclear powers, and between them they run three carriers: two Queen Elizabeth class ships for Britain and the Charles de Gaulle for France. Both run small fleets. The French air force had about 184 combat jets at the end of 2025, and Britain's escort fleet is at a historic low.
Turkey and Germany follow. Germany is the fastest riser: its 2026 spending, about $124bn including the special fund, is now well above Britain's or France's after the 2025 debt brake reform. Turkey offers mass instead, with an estimated 2,200 to 2,500 tanks, about 355,000 active troops and an arms industry building the KAAN fighter. Until KAAN arrives, it is buying 20 Typhoons from Britain.
Who spends the most in NATO?
In cash, the United States dwarfs everyone. Among European members, Germany leads on about $124bn, followed by Britain on an estimated $85bn to $92bn, France on about $66bn and Poland on about $55bn. Relative to the economy, Poland is the standout at a record 4.8% of GDP in 2026, ahead of Greece at about 3.5% and the United States at 3.4%.
Spain sits at the other end. It reached 2% only through special credits in 2025, and opted out of the alliance's 3.5% core target the same year. Italy and Canada sit at about 2%.
Which NATO members are rearming fastest?
Poland is the clearest case. More than 220,000 troops now serve, against a target of 300,000 by 2039, and the army is absorbing Korean K2 and American Abrams tanks: 217 of 250 new Abrams had arrived by September 2026. A Russian drone incursion in September 2025 pushed NATO into its Eastern Sentry mission. Finland brings 870,000 trained reservists and targets 3% of GDP by 2029. Sweden aims for 3.5% by 2030.
Elsewhere the money is real but the kit lags. The Netherlands is rebuilding a tank force that stands at 18 Leopards, Romania has 32 F-35s on order, Greece has contracted 20 and Norway has chosen British Type 26 frigates. The index counts what is in service, so none of these orders scores yet.
What does each big member bring to the alliance?
The United States brings the bombers, the carriers and most of the nuclear umbrella. Britain and France add their own nuclear weapons and expeditionary forces. Germany is rebuilding as Europe's paymaster, with Arrow 3 operational since 2025 and a new military service law in force since January 2026. Poland and Finland hold the eastern flank with tanks, artillery and large reserves. Turkey guards the Black Sea exits and hosts American B61 bombs at Incirlik.
Questions readers ask
Is NATO stronger than Russia?
Yes, conventionally and by a wide margin. NATO's members outspend Russia by at least eight to one and field far more modern aircraft and ships. Russia has more recent combat experience and the largest nuclear arsenal.
What is the weakest country in NATO?
Of the fifteen members we profile, Romania ranks lowest on our index. It flies an estimated 40 to 49 F-16s and spends about 2.3% of GDP. Its Abrams tanks, K9 howitzers and 32 F-35s on order will lift it as they arrive.
Which NATO country has the largest army?
The United States has the most active personnel, about 1.3 million. In Europe, Turkey leads with about 355,000 active troops and an estimated 2,200 to 2,500 tanks.
How many nuclear weapons does NATO have?
Three members hold them. The United States has an estimated 3,700 warheads in its stockpile, France about 290 by its last published figure and the United Kingdom an estimated 225 to 260. American bombs are also stored in some allied countries under NATO sharing.
Which NATO country spends the most on defence as a share of GDP?
Poland, at a record 4.8% of GDP in 2026, ahead of Greece at about 3.5% and the United States at 3.4%.
