How strong is the UK military in 2026?
Britain buys quality and lives with small numbers. It had 137,480 regular personnel in July 2026, 11,110 of them still in training, plus about 70,000 reservists. It is a declared nuclear power with two large carriers. Its own yards build the submarines and warships, and Typhoons are assembled at Warton.
On the Silent Dossier index it sits narrowly behind France and ahead of Taiwan, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Germany. Britain beats France on money and in the air. France is stronger on air defence and on land, and the two navies score almost level.
British jets and warships struck the Houthis in the Red Sea in 2024 and 2025, and helped shield Israel and Gulf states from drones and missiles between 2024 and 2026. RAF jets have also flown against ISIS over Iraq and Syria. Britain leads the Joint Expeditionary Force and belongs to AUKUS, with bases in Cyprus and on Diego Garcia.
How many aircraft carriers does the UK have?
Two: HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales. For most of 2026 only one was ready. Prince of Wales held high readiness while Queen Elizabeth sat through a long repair, and she returned to sea on 5 September 2026. Reports that Prince of Wales could be mothballed around 2028 remain unconfirmed.
The escorts are the real problem: Britain has the carriers but not enough ships to guard them. The Royal Navy has six Type 45 destroyers, with low availability, and five to seven Type 23 frigates. Seven Type 23s started the year, then the June 2026 Defence Investment Plan announced two more retirements. Their Type 26 and Type 31 replacements are not yet in service. Silent Dossier counts 11 to 13 destroyers and frigates in all, a historic low, and few are at sea on any given day.
Submarines tell the same story. Five or six Astute class attack boats are in service, with a seventh, Agincourt, due around the end of 2026. Around the middle of 2026 reportedly none was at sea. The 2025 Strategic Defence Review plans 12 SSN-AUKUS boats, with steel due to be cut in 2027.
How many fighter jets does the UK have?
About 155 to 160 frontline fighters. Roughly 111 are Typhoons, four of them based in the Falklands, and 47 are F-35Bs. The 48th F-35B arrived in spring 2026 and completed the first batch; one jet was lost in 2021. In 2025 Britain ordered 15 more F-35Bs and 12 F-35As, and in September 2026 it confirmed the F-35As will join NATO's nuclear mission.
Behind the fighters are 14 Voyager tankers and three E-7 Wedgetail radar planes. Silent Dossier estimates about 600 military aircraft in all. GCAP, the jet meant to follow Typhoon, is in development.
Air defence on the ground is thin, with no long range missile at all. Sky Sabre, which fires CAMM, is a medium range system, and Silent Dossier estimates seven to 13 launchers. Six more, a £350m order, arrive from late 2026 into 2027.
How strong is the British Army?
This is the weakest part of British power. The tank fleet of 148 to 213 Challenger 2s is shrinking to 148 rebuilt Challenger 3s, due to reach initial service in 2027 and full capability in 2030. Fourteen Challenger 2s went to Ukraine. Britain does have 50 AH-64E Apache attack helicopters.
Artillery is worse. The AS90 guns are effectively gone after 32 were given to Ukraine, leaving an interim fleet of 14 Swedish Archer howitzers until 72 RCH 155 guns ordered as replacements arrive. Turkey scores far ahead of Britain on land power, and so do Poland and Greece. Even Germany and France score slightly higher.
Does the UK have nuclear weapons?
Yes. Four Vanguard class submarines carry Trident II D5 missiles with a range of about 12,000 km. Silent Dossier estimates 40 to 58 missiles and about 225 warheads. The government raised its cap to 260 in 2021 and does not publish the real figure.
Britain builds the submarines and warheads itself, and a new warhead, Astraea, is in development. The missile is a joint American and British system. The 12 F-35As will give the RAF a nuclear role inside NATO.
How much does the UK spend on defence?
Silent Dossier estimates $85bn to $92bn in 2026, about 2.3 to 2.5 per cent of GDP on NATO's counting rules. The core defence settlement for 2026/27 is about £65.5bn, or 2.03 per cent. The 2025 review set a path to 2.5 per cent by 2027 (2.6 per cent counting intelligence) and 3 per cent in the next parliament. Germany now outspends Britain.
The money is still not enough for the plans. The June Defence Investment Plan cut two more frigates, and Defence Secretary Healey reportedly resigned that month over funding. Exports hit a record of more than £20bn in 2025. Recent deals include 20 Typhoons for Turkey worth $7.1bn and five Type 26 frigates for Norway worth $13.5bn.
Combat record and readiness
Struck Houthi targets in the Red Sea in 2024 and 2025 and flies air operations against ISIS in Iraq and Syria. RAF jets helped defend Israel and the Gulf against Iranian drones and missiles from 2024 to 2026.
BAE builds Typhoon, Type 26 frigates and Astute and Dreadnought submarines, and Babcock the Type 31. MBDA UK makes CAMM, Storm Shadow, Brimstone and ASRAAM, and AWE the nuclear warheads. The UK is a partner in the GCAP fighter.
The escort fleet is at a historic low of 11 to 13 destroyers and frigates, few of them available, and Astute submarine availability is poor. Donating AS90 guns to Ukraine left an artillery gap. The RAF has about 158 frontline fighters, and money stays tight on the path to 2.5% of GDP by 2027.
