Does Egypt have a good military?
It has the biggest in the Arab world. About 438,000 active troops are backed by some 479,000 reservists and nearly 400,000 paramilitaries. Tank holdings are estimated at 2,500 to 3,500, though many older M60A3s and T-62s sit in storage. Around 1,130 M1A1 Abrams form the modern core, and 555 of them are approved for rebuild to the M1A1SA standard.
The official budget is small, an estimated $2.4bn to $2.6bn in 2025. That excludes roughly $1.3bn a year in US military aid and the revenue of the military's own businesses. Egypt's task is turning its numbers into a modern force.
How many fighter jets does Egypt have?
Silent Dossier estimates 400 to 480 combat aircraft. Between 200 and 218 F-16C/Ds form the backbone, but they carry no AMRAAM missiles, which limits them in air combat. Rafale is the real upgrade. About 32 of the 54 or 55 ordered had arrived by May 2026, and in September Cairo formally asked for 24 more. Some 46 to 50 MiG-29M/M2s and older Mirages make up the rest.
Talk of Chinese J-10C fighters remains unconfirmed, and the Su-35 order was dropped under the threat of US sanctions. Claims that Egyptian Su-35s or J-10s are flying are rumour until Cairo shows them.
How powerful is the Egyptian navy?
It is the strongest Arab navy. Egypt operates two Mistral helicopter carriers, Gamal Abdel Nasser and Anwar El Sadat, three FREMM frigates, three or four MEKO A-200 frigates and four Gowind corvettes, three of them built at Alexandria. Its submarine force counts four modern Type 209/1400s plus four old Romeo boats that are largely out of service.
What air defences does Egypt have?
Systems from four countries. Russian S-300VM batteries, shown in public for the first time in July 2026, sit alongside older Patriot PAC-2 units, German IRIS-T and Chinese HQ-9B systems reportedly acquired in 2025. Silent Dossier estimates 8 to 16 long range batteries in all, and none of the counts are official. A US NASAMS sale worth about $4.67bn was published in March 2026, but whether it has been signed is unclear.
What holds Egypt's military back?
Logistics and experience. Egypt flies American, French, Russian and Chinese types side by side, and each needs its own spares and mechanics. Since 1973 its fighting has been counter-insurgency in North Sinai and air strikes in eastern Libya, never a war against another state. Its factories build under licence: Abrams at Factory 200, K9A1EGY howitzers with Hanwha, and frigates and corvettes at Alexandria. It designs no fighter and no long range missile of its own.
How does Egypt compare with other Arab militaries?
On land and at sea, nobody in the Arab world matches it. Overall, Saudi Arabia ranks ahead of Egypt on the Silent Dossier index, carried by its air defence and a budget many times larger per soldier. Israel and Turkey also rank higher in the wider region. In Africa, Egypt leads Algeria and Morocco. Cairo's habit of buying from Washington, Paris, Moscow and Beijing gives it political room and a tangle of supply chains.
Compare Egypt
Combat record and readiness
Has fought no state-on-state war since 1973. Fought a counter-insurgency against Wilayat Sinai until 2023 and struck eastern Libya between 2015 and 2020. Has kept a Red Sea security posture since Houthi shipping attacks began in 2023.
Builds M1A1 tanks and K9A1EGY howitzers under licence and assembles Gowind and MEKO warships at Alexandria. AOI makes armoured vehicles, ammunition, small arms and drones. Egypt makes no fighters or major missiles of its own.
A mixed fleet of US, French, Russian, German and Chinese types complicates logistics, and its F-16s lack AMRAAM missiles. Egypt dropped a 24-jet Su-35 order under US sanctions risk, and most Romeo submarines no longer sail. Rafale deliveries continue toward a fleet of 54 or more.
