Pakistan Military Strength 2026

THE SHORT ANSWERPakistan has one of the largest armed forces in the world: about 660,000 active troops, an estimated 170 nuclear warheads, missiles reaching 2,750 km and an estimated 380 to 420 fighters, mostly Chinese designs or built with China. The May 2025 clash with India proved its air force could hit back. It also proved its bases were exposed.

How strong is Pakistan's military in 2026?

Pakistan fields about 660,000 active personnel. Silent Dossier estimates another 550,000 reservists and some 290,000 paramilitary. It is a declared nuclear power with an estimated 170 warheads. The FY2026-27 defence allocation is about PKR 3 trillion, roughly US$10.4 to 10.9 billion and almost 18 per cent up on the year, before military pensions. That is a heavy load for an economy living under an IMF programme, and about an eighth of what India spends.

Pakistan makes up the gap with nuclear weapons, Chinese hardware and a fast growing missile force. The army set up a Rocket Force Command in August 2025 to run its Fatah guided rockets, and in May 2026 it launched the Fatah-4, a ground launched cruise missile with a 750 km range. The Shaheen-III reaches 2,750 km. On our index Pakistan's missile score is higher than India's, though it trails India overall.

What happened in the 2025 India and Pakistan clash?

From 7 to 10 May 2025 the two nuclear states fought their sharpest air and missile exchange in decades. Islamabad says its J-10CE fighters, firing PL-15 missiles, shot down several Indian jets including Rafales. India admitted unspecified losses without naming types. Silent Dossier assesses that one to three Indian jets were lost, at least one of them a Rafale.

Pakistan paid on the ground. Indian missiles and drones damaged Nur Khan air base, which Islamabad later admitted, and hangars at Jacobabad and Bholari were hit. Pakistan denies losing any aircraft. Since then the money has gone into air defence and drones.

The western front is hot too. A border war with the Afghan Taliban in October 2025 ended in a ceasefire on 19 October that did not last. In February 2026 Pakistan declared 'open war' and struck Kabul, Kandahar and Paktia.

What fighter jets does Pakistan have?

The JF-17 Thunder, built at Kamra with China, is the backbone, with about 126 single seat jets. An order for 30 Block III jets with AESA radar is in slow production. Some 20 J-10CEs are in service and the fleet is expected to reach 36. Between 72 and 75 F-16s remain under US end use checks, and a December 2025 support package keeps them flying to 2040. Old Mirage III/5s and F-7s are being retired.

Pakistan has no fifth generation fighter. In June 2025 Islamabad disclosed a Chinese offer of 40 J-35 stealth jets with KJ-500 radar planes and HQ-19 missile defences. Islamabad later backed away from the claim, no contract has been confirmed and talks were reported stalled in August 2026.

How big is Pakistan's navy?

Small, but newer every year. Four Chinese Type 054A/P frigates arrived between 2021 and 2023, and two Turkish designed Babur class corvettes are in commission. PNS Hangor, the first of eight air independent submarines, was commissioned on 30 April 2026 and fired its first live weapon on 26 September. Four of the eight are being built in Karachi. With three Agosta 90Bs, two older Agosta 70s and midget boats, the submarine force runs to six to eight hulls.

Who are Pakistan's allies?

China supplies most of its jets, tanks, submarines and air defence. In September 2025 Pakistan signed a Strategic Mutual Defence Agreement with Saudi Arabia, under which an attack on one counts as an attack on both. It is still a major US ally outside NATO, and it buys Turkish drones and warships.

Pakistan trails India in money, ships and aircraft numbers, and nothing on the order books will close that gap. Its nuclear arsenal and a combat tested air force mean India cannot count on a short war staying short.

Combat record and readiness

Fought India for four days in May 2025. Pakistan claims seven Indian jets fell to J-10CE fighters with PL-15 missiles, and at least one Rafale loss is confirmed, while Indian strikes damaged Nur Khan and other bases. Fought the Afghan Taliban in October 2025 and declared open war on them in February 2026.

PAC Kamra co-produces the JF-17, HIT builds Al-Khalid and Haider tanks, and Karachi Shipyard builds Hangor submarines and corvettes. Pakistan makes all its strategic missiles plus Fatah rockets and cruise missiles. Engines, radars and sensors are imported.

Depends on Chinese platforms, while the F-16 fleet stays under US end-use monitoring. An IMF programme limits spending, JF-17 Block III output is slow and Mirage retirements leave squadron gaps. The 2025 clash showed its airbases were open to long-range precision strikes.

Questions readers ask

Is Pakistan's army strong?

Yes, by regional standards. It has about 660,000 active troops, nuclear weapons and an air force that fought India in 2025. India still outspends it roughly eight to one.

How many nuclear weapons does Pakistan have?

Silent Dossier estimates about 170 warheads. Pakistan publishes no official figure.

Who would win, India or Pakistan?

India would prevail in a long conventional war, thanks to its budget, navy and fighter numbers. Pakistan's nuclear arsenal and its showing in May 2025 make any short war costly and unpredictable for both.

Does Pakistan have J-35 stealth fighters?

No. Islamabad disclosed a Chinese offer of 40 J-35s in 2025, but no contract or delivery has been confirmed and talks were reported stalled in 2026.

What is Pakistan's defence budget?

The FY2026-27 allocation is about PKR 3 trillion, roughly US$10.4 to 10.9 billion, not counting military pensions.
