How strong is Russia's military in 2026?
There are two Russian militaries. One is a nuclear force with about 4,300 warheads in the military stockpile, roughly 5,500 counting retired weapons, and missiles with a claimed reach of 18,000 kilometres. The other is an army that has fought in Ukraine since February 2022 and taken heavy losses doing it.
Silent Dossier estimates active strength at 1.1 to 1.5 million. A 2024 decree set 1.5 million as the target, and real manning falls short. Behind them stand an estimated 1.5 million reservists and about 340,000 Rosgvardia troops.
Money is harder to pin down. The planned 2026 defence line is about 12.9 trillion roubles, above 6 per cent of GDP, yet spending in the first half ran at about one and a half times the plan. Silent Dossier puts real outlays at $145bn to $200bn. The 2027 draft raises the line to 17.1 trillion roubles.
How many tanks does Russia have?
The war has rewritten this number. Silent Dossier estimates 2,000 to 3,500 tanks with combat units, a mix of T-90Ms, T-72B3s and T-80BVMs. Visually confirmed losses since 2022 exceed 4,300. Kyiv claims more than 12,000.
The depots are emptying. Russia had 7,342 tanks in storage in 2021. Satellite counts in June 2026 found about 2,090 left, and only around 850 of those worth restoring. Factories build new T-90Ms and rebuild old T-72s, T-80s and even T-62s, but the reserve that let Moscow absorb four years of losses is nearly spent.
How powerful is the Russian Air Force?
Russia flies an estimated 1,150 combat aircraft. The core is at least 110 Su-35S fighters, 100 to 130 Su-34 strike jets and about 110 Su-30SMs. The Su-57 is still a showpiece. Silent Dossier can confirm only 16 to 35 in service. Batches arrived in February and September 2026 in numbers Moscow will not publish, and fire hit the factory's composites workshop in April.
On 1 June 2025 Ukrainian drones struck bomber bases deep inside Russia, among them Olenya and Belaya, and destroyed roughly 10 to 13 Tu-95s and Tu-22M3s. Between 100 and 125 bombers remain. About six A-50 radar planes survive after the 2024 losses, too few to watch a front this long.
How strong is the Russian Navy?
Russia's naval power is under water. It runs about 60 submarines, roughly 31 of them nuclear, including eight Borei-class ballistic missile boats and five or six Yasen submarines armed with cruise missiles. The Yasens are the most dangerous ships Russia owns.
The surface fleet is weaker. Admiral Kuznetsov, the only carrier, does not sail and may be decommissioned. Some ten destroyers, 14 frigates and about 80 corvettes and small missile ships make up the rest. Ukrainian drones and missiles have mauled the Black Sea Fleet. Kyiv says about 30 per cent of it has been sunk or damaged, a figure Silent Dossier cannot verify.
Is Russia's military weaker after Ukraine?
In equipment, yes. Tanks, artillery barrels, air defence batteries and aircraft have gone faster than industry can replace them, and sanctions choke the supply of microelectronics and machine tools. Moscow leans on North Korea for 4 to 6.5 million shells, KN-23 and KN-24 missiles, 170mm guns and troops. Its Geran-2 drones are Iranian Shaheds built under licence.
In experience, no. Outside Ukraine, no army has seen as much heavy fighting since 2022. Russian plants turn out Geran drones in the thousands every month. Export customers wait longer as the front takes priority, and India's fifth S-400 regiment is not due until November 2026.

Combat record and readiness
At full-scale war in Ukraine since February 2022, still ongoing in 2026. Its Syria deployment wound down after Assad fell in December 2024. Ukrainian drones destroyed an estimated 10 to 13 strategic bombers at their bases in June 2025.
Russian plants make fighters, tanks, nuclear submarines and Iskander, Kalibr, Kinzhal and Zircon missiles. Wartime output leans on refurbishing stored tanks and on Geran drones made in the thousands each month at Alabuga. It also draws shells and missiles from North Korea and Iran.
Losses of armour and artillery barrels have drained Soviet storage stocks, with an estimated 2,088 tanks left of 7,342 before the war. Sanctions restrict electronics and machine tools, partly bypassed through China. Ukrainian strikes have degraded the Black Sea Fleet.
