How strong is South Korea's military in 2026?
Seoul has built its forces to beat North Korea fast, and it has chosen quality over mass to do it. The 2026 defence budget is KRW 65.86 trillion, about $44.7bn, up 7.5 per cent and roughly 2.3 per cent of GDP. The request for 2027 is KRW 73.27 trillion.
Active strength fell to 450,000 by July 2025, from 563,000 in 2019, because there are fewer young men to call up. About 3.1 million reservists stand behind them, along with roughly 28,500 American troops under the 1953 defence treaty and a US promise of nuclear cover. On Silent Dossier's index that mix puts South Korea behind only the United States, China and Russia, and ahead of India and Japan.
How strong is the South Korean Air Force?
Silent Dossier estimates about 390 fighters. The sharp end is 39 F-35As, with 20 more due from around 2027. Behind them fly 59 F-15Ks, about 160 KF-16s now being upgraded and some 60 FA-50 light fighters. The last F-5s go by the end of 2027.
The KF-21 Boramae matters most. The first production jet joined the air force on 22 September 2026, and Seoul wants 40 by 2028. Indonesia is in talks over 16.
How strong is the South Korean Army?
Silent Dossier estimates about 2,100 tanks, including 250 to 300 K2 Black Panthers and some 1,500 K1 series tanks. The army also has around 1,200 K9 self propelled howitzers and about 250 rocket launchers, many of them Chunmoo. Poland is taking a second batch of 180 K2s, and Spain has bought K9s.
Missiles are the quiet heavyweight. Seoul keeps launcher numbers secret. The Hyunmoo-5, a conventional bunker buster, reached operational units in January 2026. It carries a warhead of about eight tonnes and has an estimated range of up to 3,000 km.
How strong is the South Korean Navy?
The navy has about 13 destroyers, including the Aegis ships of the Sejong the Great and Jeongjo the Great classes, an estimated 16 frigates and 21 submarines. Three KSS-III boats carry vertical tubes for ballistic missiles. The first Batch II boat, Jang Yeong-sil, was launched in October 2025.
Washington agreed in November 2025 to back a South Korean nuclear powered attack submarine, and Seoul now aims to launch one in the mid 2030s. Air defence is thinner than the threat. Silent Dossier estimates eight Patriot batteries, and the home built L-SAM upper tier interceptor is not due in service until 2027 or 2028.
Is South Korea stronger than North Korea?
Yes, conventionally, and by a wide margin in quality. The North has nearly three times as many active troops, roughly twice the tanks and some twenty times the rocket launchers. Its aircraft and most of its ships are decades old. What the South lacks is a nuclear weapon, and that gap keeps it tied to the United States.
The bigger long term danger is at home. The army lost a fifth of its soldiers in six years and is already short of NCOs. Newer weapons can cover part of that hole, not all of it.

Combat record and readiness
No war since 1953. Faces border incidents with the North, including trash balloons, GPS jamming and DMZ warning shots in 2024 and 2025. Contributes to peacekeeping and anti-piracy missions.
A major exporter of K2 tanks, K9 howitzers, Chunmoo rockets, FA-50 jets, submarines and frigates. Builds the KF-21 fighter, in air force service from September 2026, plus L-SAM air defence and Hyunmoo-5 missiles. Arms exports reached $15.4bn in 2025.
Well equipped and at high readiness, but falling birth rates have shrunk active strength from 563,000 in 2019 to about 450,000 in 2025, and NCOs are short. New systems such as the KF-21, L-SAM and KSS-III submarines offset the manpower drop.
